The Ugandan government is stepping up efforts to unlock income opportunities for content creators, signaling a strong commitment to growing the country’s digital economy. Speaking at the 2026 CIO Conclave press launch, State Minister for National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Kabbyanga, emphasized the need to help young creators benefit from platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.
Across Africa, progress is already visible. Rwanda recently became the first country on the continent to enable direct monetisation on TikTok, allowing creators to earn through brand partnerships, creator programs, and virtual gifts. Uganda is now aiming to follow this path by strengthening collaboration with global tech platforms and improving digital infrastructure.
Key efforts include enhancing digital payment systems, aligning policies with modern digital business models, and building support systems for creators. These steps are designed to ensure Ugandan creators can not only grow their audiences but also earn sustainably.
At the same time, the government is prioritising online safety. Through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), measures are being strengthened to curb harmful content while promoting responsible digital use.
This balanced approach highlights Uganda’s vision of a digital space that drives innovation, creates jobs, and safeguards public trust.
