A New Era of Internet Connectivity

Uganda’s digital transformation journey has taken a major step forward following the announcement by the Uganda Communications Commission that discussions between the Government of Uganda and Starlink have successfully concluded, paving the way for Starlink’s entry into Uganda’s communications sector.

The move signals a new chapter for internet access in Uganda especially for rural communities, businesses, schools, and institutions that have long struggled with unreliable or unavailable connectivity.

For years, Uganda’s internet market has largely been dominated by providers such as MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda. While these companies have played a critical role in expanding mobile and fiber internet access, many parts of the country still face challenges including: Weak network coverage and slow internet speeds

While many rural districts still struggle with unstable or non-existent internet access because telecom operators must first invest heavily in towers, fiber lines, and power infrastructure. This often leaves remote communities underserved.

If Starlink can be deloyed in rural areas where traditional Internet service providers (ISPs) may take years to expand. This could transform state of connectivity in Rural schools Health centers, Refugee settlements, Farms and agribusinesses, Tourism sites and more.

We also expect faster internet speeds even during peak internet usage and without a doubt this will directly translate to innovation, investment, and digital inclusion all essential for: Education, E-commerce, Telemedicine, Government services and Digital banking.

This development should be embraced by all Ugandans to achieve the 500bn economy.
